Dies aged 87,singing legend, Sabah, Lebanese

  Sabah was nicknamed "Shahroura", Arabic for "singing bird" by her millions of fans

Lebanese singer and actress Sabah, one of the Arab world's best-known entertainers, has died aged 87.

Sabah, whose real name was Jeanette Gergis al-Feghali, first came to prominence in the 1950s as star of Egyptian movies.
During her more than six-decade long career, she released over 50 albums and acted in 98 films.
She died at her home in Beirut of an unspecified illness, reported Lebanon's National News Agency.
Sabah was the first Arab singer to perform at Olympia in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, Piccadilly Theatre in London and the Sydney Opera House.

Born in Bdadoun, a Lebanese town in the Baabda-Aley province, she released her first song in 1940.
The singer soon caught the eye of Egyptian film producer Asia Dagher, who immediately signed her for three films.
The first of these, El-Qalb Louh Wahid (The Heart Has Its Reasons), made her a star - and she was known by her character's name, Sabah, ever after.
But she also acquired several affectionate nicknames, including "Shahroura", Arabic for "singing bird", and "Sabbouha," a diminutive of Sabah.

Among her most popular films were Soft Hands (1964), Ataba Square (1959) and The Second Man (1960), in which she played a cabaret singer who vows to avenge her brother's death at the hands of a smuggling ring.

At home, she was humorously mocked for refusing to leave the limelight, as well as her garish outfits and use of cosmetic surgery.

Sabah released over 50 albums and acted in 98 films during her career

She married nine times, most most notably to Egyptian actor Roshdi Abaza and Lebanese author-director Wassim Tabbara.
Her last marriage, to Lebanese artist Fadi Lubnan, lasted 17 years.
She had two children, Dr Sabah Shammas and actress Howayda Mansy, both of whom live in the United States.

Few artists in the Arab world enjoyed the level of glory and stardom of Sabah. Her unique voice and glamorous style made her one of the top singers and actresses in Lebanon and Egypt. In her hometown she's considered one of the icons of the traditional song. 


Sabah belonged to what is referred to as "the golden era of arts" in the Arab world. Her personal life was as eventful as her singing career. She got married 9 times but she was alone in her final days. Her death evokes a lot of nostalgia across the region.

"Today, Lebanon lost a legend. Sabah is gone but she remains in our hearts," Lebanese pop star Nancy Ajram wrote on Twitter.
"Her memory will remain in the minds and hearts of millions," she tweeted.
"Our giants are leaving, our cedars are diminishing. Farewell our shahroura, our beloved, rest in peace," added singer Ragheb Alameh in a Twitter post.
Lebanese politician Walid Jumblatt wrote on Twitter: "She was a great singer of a Lebanon that my generation knew, that will never come back".

The World leaders are arriving in Australia for this weekend's G20 summit in the Queensland city of Brisbane.

 

The two-day summit, attended by the US, Chinese and Russian leaders among others, will focus on promoting growth.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said leaders would discuss job creation, identifying tax cheats and strengthening the global economy.
Tensions with Russia over Ukraine will also draw attention, while campaigners want climate change on the agenda.
In Brisbane, local government workers have been given a day off because of the number of travel restrictions in place. Thirteen world leaders are due to arrive in the city on Friday.

Who cares about the G20 summit? In 90 seconds

Some 6,000 police will be deployed to maintain security. Twenty-seven different groups have been given permits to protest at designated areas, with thousands of people expected over the weekend.
In early developments:

• British Prime Minister David Cameron has outlined new measures to tackle jihadists who fight abroad, in an address to the Australian parliament.
• Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for closer tripartite defence ties with the US and Australia, and urged "tangible steps taken in the area of security and defence cooperation" with Canberra, in a piece for the Australian Financial Review.

What's on the summit agenda - and what's not

Australia has emphasised that the summit will concentrate on the economy.
"Six years ago, the impacts of the global financial crisis reverberated throughout the world. While those crisis years are behind us, we still struggle with its legacy of debt and joblessness," Mr Abbott wrote in an article ahead of the summit.
"The challenge for G20 leaders is clear - to lift growth, boost jobs and strengthen financial resilience. We need to encourage demand to ward off the deflation that threatens the major economies of Europe."
Leaders are expected to expand on plans agreed in February at the G20 finance ministers' meeting to boost global economic growth by 2% in five years.
"To achieve this goal, G20 members have identified almost 1,000 new measures in their domestic growth strategies," Mr Abbott wrote.
Tax avoidance by major multinationals will also be discussed, with Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey promising "very aggressive approaches".

  Security will be tight for the summit, with protests expected

No climate talks? Australia has, however, stood firm on keeping climate change off the agenda.
"Of course climate change is hugely important and of course climate change is both a risk and an opportunity to be dealt with when discussing the global economy," Mr Hockey said on Thursday.
"But there are many issues, many issues that will help to drive economic growth and that will come from the structural reforms laid down before this meeting over the weekend."
Earlier this week, the US and China made what US President Barack Obama described as "historic" pledges on emissions, with the US promising greater cuts and China for the first time setting a date by which emissions would peak.

The protesters took to Sydney's Bondi Beach to make a statement about the global climate change debate

Mr Abbott's government, however, is facing criticism over its climate policies. It has scrapped a carbon tax and rolled back on targets for renewable energy use, in favour of paying polluters to reduce emissions.
On Thursday, more than 200 protesters buried their heads in the sand at Bondi Beach in a symbolic demonstration over climate change inaction.
Eyes will also be on Russian leader Vladimir Putin, amid tensions over Ukraine. Some Australians had called for Mr Putin to be blocked from the summit over the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.
Thirty-eight Australians were among the 298 people who died when the plane was brought down over rebel-held eastern Ukraine, by a missile that the West believes was supplied by Russia. Russia rejects the claim.
Mr Abbott, who discussed the issue with Mr Putin in Beijing earlier this week, described Russia's actions in Ukraine as part of a "regrettable pattern" by a nation that was being "much more assertive".
He said he told Mr Putin that Russia should aspire to be a superpower "for peace and freedom and prosperity" instead of "trying to recreate the lost glories of tsarism or the old Soviet Union".

What is G20?

• The "Group of Twenty" represents two-thirds of the world's population, 85% of global GDP and over 75% of global trade.

• It began in 1999 as an annual meeting for finance ministers and central bank governors following the Asian financial crisis, before evolving to also include a summit for countries' leaders in 2008, after the global financial crisis.

• G20 meetings are aimed at deepening economic co-operation and strengthening the global economy.

• It comprises 19 countries and the European Union.
• At each meeting, the host country invites non-member guest countries to attend. For 2014, Australia has invited Spain, Mauritania, Myanmar, Senegal, New Zealand and Singapore.

How do you make money from waste or rubbish?

• Nothing is waste for me. Things that were once made out of timber, we makes out of plastic waste
• We use recycled plastic and sawdust waste, which is hugely available. The opportunity was born due to the need for plastic poles. People needed an alternative to timber, a product that does not rot and one that cannot be affected by termites
• Every day more than 10,000 metric tonnes of waste is normally generated in Kenya. This is gathered by 15 young people and women who sell it to us for processing.

What are the main issues for a woman starting a business in an African country?

• Female entrepreneurs may suffer systematic discrimination while trying to access resources needed to grow their businesses - for example, while trying to access credit from financiers
• I set up a business in the waste manufacturing industry, which is not a common type of business sector that women choose to venture into. Women should be courageous to start their businesses in a broader and more competitive range of sectors
• Women entrepreneurs should network and look for mentors who will advise, encourage and help them in setting up the business and to also provide them with the visibility that they really need. Surrounding ourselves with people who promote our ideas, rather than killing them, goes a long way.

Sister Cristina Scuccia has just released an album that includes her cover of Madonna’s Like a Virgin. But she isn’t the first nun to raise eyebrows.

Sisters for life!” Madonna tweeted in October. She wasn’t referring to Lady Gaga or Rihanna: her affection was directed at Sicilian nun Sister Cristina Scuccia, who has recorded a cover of the US pop star’s 1984 hit Like a Virgin.
The singing nun – who invited the audience to join her in reciting the Lord’s Prayer after winning The Voice of Italy talent show in June – today releases her debut album. She claims her cover of the racy classic is more of “a secular prayer than a pop song”, telling Catholic newspaper Avvenire: “If you read the lyrics without being influenced by what has gone before, you discover that it is a song about the capacity of love to make people new again, to release them from their past. And that’s how I wanted to interpret it. That’s why we’ve transformed it from the pop-dance track it was into a romantic ballad.”
The 26-year-old argues: “I chose it myself, without any desire to provoke or scandalise.” Yet Italy’s Religious Information Service news agency called it a “reckless and sly commercial operation”. Holy Sisters are not always cut from the same cloth: BBC Culture picks out some of Sister Cristina’s ground-breaking predecessors, including an erotic poet and a 1960s activist.

“I shall not play the slenderness/Of your fine, exquisite torso/For the bend of your waist is as/Troubling as a trill in the song.” These lines were not penned by a male poet, but by a Mexican nun who was born out of wedlock in the country’s central highlands. Juana entered a convent in 1667 at the age of 16, and wrote plays, essays and poetry that challenged the views of the day.
With her Response to Sister Filotea, she defended a woman’s right to education, becoming one of the first published feminists in the New World; her love poems to the wife of the viceroy stray beyond friendship to obsession. Some of her words even veer into Katy Perry territory: “Loving you is a crime/For which I shall never atone,” she wrote. “It does not matter if you elude my arms/my dear, when thought alone can imprison you.”
After a bishop anonymously circulated one of her letters – in which she criticised a priest’s sermon – she was forced to stop writing and sign a renewal of her vows, which she did in her own blood.

Celebrated as a 12th-Century visionary, mystic and composer, Hildegard also stood up against prevailing views. The 10th child of a noble family, she was sent to an anchoress at the age of eight after experiencing visions, and went on to establish two convents in the Rhine valley. She wrote to the Pope urging him to work harder on reforming the Church, and provided a Christian burial for a man who had been excommunicated, arguing he had repented on his deathbed.
Among her writings on philosophy and natural history, there are several references to sexual desire, including one section that has been called the first description of the female orgasm. Referring to sensuality between men and women, the passage is seen as a progressive counterpoint to the view of sex as unclean.
Corita Kent

Born in Iowa, Sister Corita taught art in Los Angeles for 21 years and became famous for her Pop Art prints during the 1960s and ‘70s. Her messages of love and peace chimed with the counterculture of the time, and she offered a spiritual take on consumerism, elevating advertising logos and signage to the level of the divine.
Corita left the church in 1968, her artwork moving away from co-opting brand packaging and increasingly addressing issues like civil rights and the Vietnam War. When the US Postal Service launched her design for the 1985 ‘Love Stamp’ at the studio where The Love Boat had been filmed, Corita declined to attend, objecting to a link between the love she illustrated and the saccharine romance of the TV series.
By subverting consumerism and engaging with the social movements of the 1960s, Corita created a radical art that has seen her called “Warhol with a conscience”. In one work, she included the lines “I admire people who march./ I admire people who go to jail./ I don’t have the guts to do that./ so I do what I can.”

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has urged Asia-Pacific nations to accelerate economic integration to spur global growth, on day two of the Apec summit.

The high-level meeting includes the leaders of the US, Russia, China, Japan and others

He spoke as leaders from the 21-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) bloc met for roundtable talks.
Discussion is expected to centre on trade agreements and a regional anti-corruption initiative.
On Monday, the Japanese and Chinese leaders held talks for the first time on the sidelines of the summit.
Ties between the two Asian giants have been extremely tense due to a territorial row over disputed islands in the East China Sea.
US deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said the US welcomed the meeting as it was an opportunity to lower the simmering tensions between the two countries.
Uncertain factors On Tuesday, Mr Xi in his opening remarks pushed for a trade liberalisation framework called the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP).
"Currently, the global economic recovery still faces many unstable and uncertain factors," the Chinese leader said outside Beijing where the summit is taking place.

The US and China are pushing separate wide-reaching trade agreements at the summit

"Facing the new situation, we should further promote regional economic integration and create a pattern of opening up that is conducive to long-term development."
China is proposing a two-year study on the FTAAP plan which will be presented to the Apec leaders for approval.
However, some say it could distract from another wide-reaching trade agreement backed by the US called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) which China is not part of.
Some Chinese commentators have said the TPP is a method to counter China's growing influence in the Asian region.
However, Mr Obama rejected this in an interview with China's Xinhua state news agency, saying the US was in no way trying to contain China.
Mr Obama pointed out that as major trade partners, the two countries were invested in each others futures.
"We want China and the Chinese people to succeed and contribute to global security and prosperity, because it is good for all of us," he said.
Apec, which includes the US, China, Japan, South Korea and Canada, accounts for more than 50% of global economic output.
In other developments:

• The US and China have agreed to grant visas valid for up to a decade to visitors between the two countries, up from a maximum of one year.
• Mr Obama, in the interview with Xinhua, said the US was willing to strengthen counter-terrorism co-operation with China to stem the flow of foreign terrorist fighters and crack down on terrorist funding networks.
• China has pledged $10m (£6.3m) to support the Apec mechanism for capacity building.
• Australian leader Tony Abbot is expected to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Mr Abbot has pledged to hold a "robust conversation" with Mr Putin over the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine in July.

The captain of the South Korean ferry which sank in April has been found guilty of gross negligence and sentenced to 36 years in prison

Lee was found not guilty of the charge of homicide through wilful negligence

The Sewol ferry was carrying 476 people when it went down. More than 300 died, most of them school students.
Lee Joon-seok was among 15 crew members on trial over the sinking, one of South Korea's worst maritime disasters.
Prosecutors charged him with homicide and called for the death penalty, but judges acquitted him on that charge.
Lee is in his late 60s, and with his jail term he will likely spend the rest of his life in prison, says the BBC's Steve Evans in Gwangju.
Our correspondent says the main question was whether there was intent to kill and there was evidence of negligence.
Crew members did not secure cargo which moved when the vessel took a tight corner, toppling the ferry, and Lee was filmed leaving the sinking ship while many passengers remained inside.
During the trial Lee apologised for abandoning them.

Fourteen other crew members were jailed on a raft of charges

The chief engineer of the ferry, identified by his surname Park, was found guilty of murder and jailed for 30 years.
Thirteen other crew members were given jail sentences of up to 20 years on charges including abandonment and violating maritime law.
Relatives of victims were distraught at the verdict, with some weeping, according to AFP news agency.
One woman reportedly screamed in the courtroom: "It's not fair. What about the lives of our children? They (the defendants) deserve worse than death."

How South Korea ferry disaster unfolded

The disaster had triggered nationwide grief followed by outrage, with revelations of mismanagement by ferry operators and lapses in the emergency response.
Hours before the verdict, the South Korean government called off the search for bodies in the vessel, which sank on 16 April.
A total of 295 bodies have been retrieved by teams of divers but nine people remain unaccounted for.
Public fury The case led to severe criticism of safety standards and of the government's handling of the rescue operation.

The South Korean coast guard is due to be disbanded and replaced with a new agency after accusations that it did not act swiftly or aggressively enough to save lives.
The disaster has been blamed on a combination of illegal redesigns, the overloading of cargo and the inexperience of the crew member steering the vessel.
There was public fury after survivors testified that they had been told by the crew to stay put even as the boat started to sink.
At the end of the trial last month, Mr Lee said he had committed a crime for which he deserved to die - but denied that he had intended to sacrifice the lives of the passengers.
The widespread outcry over the case had led to doubts over whether the crew would get a fair hearing.
A separate trial is taking place for employees of the firm that operated the ferry, Chonghaejin Marine Co.
The owner of the company and billionaire businessman Yoo Byung-eun disappeared after the disaster and was later found dead.
Meanwhile last week three of his relatives were jailed for embezzlement, while a French court is due to decide next month on whether to extradite Yoo's daughter on similar charges.

The Netherlands to remember those who died in Flight MH17.

Four months after a Malaysia Airlines plane carrying 298 people crashed in rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine, a national memorial to the victims will take place in the Netherlands.
The majority of the victims - 193 - were Dutch.

Russia withdrew a deal to supply gas to ukraine.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuri Prodan said that ,"Gas supplies to Ukraine have been reduced to zero," 
Russia's state-owned gas giant Gazprom said Ukraine had to pay upfront for its gas supplies, after Kiev failed to settle its huge debt.
Gazprom had sought from Kiev $1.95bn (£1.15bn) - out of $4.5bn it says it is owed - by 06:00 GMT.
The Russian firm said it would continue to supply gas to Europe.
Russia-Ukraine ties remain tense since Moscow annexed Crimea in February.
Kiev says Moscow backs separatists in the east of the country. Russia denies the charge.
 

"Today, from 10:00 Moscow time, Gazprom, according to the existing contract, moved Naftogaz to prepayment for gas supplies," Gazprom said in a statement on Monday morning.
"From today, the Ukrainian company will receive Russian natural gas only in the amounts it has paid for."

Ukraine's energy minister Yuri Prodan.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Ukraine's position on the issue "smacks of blackmail".
The latest moves follow crisis talks between Ukraine, Russia and the European Union on the issue.
Moments later, both Gazprom and Ukraine's state-owned Naftogaz company filed lawsuits against each other in the Stockholm arbitration institute.
Gazprom said it wanted to recover $4.5bn from Naftogaz, which is dealing with gas supplies to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Naftogaz said it was seeking to recover $6bn in "overpayment" for gas since 2010.
The latest moves follow crisis talks between Ukraine, Russia and the European Union on the issue.
"We reached no agreement. The chances that we meet again are slim," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kuprianov said after the latest round of the talks ended in Kiev over the weekend.
Mr Oettinger later added that Ukraine intended to fill its gas transit commitments to the EU and he was also confident that Russia would meet its gas supply pledges to Europe.
Ukraine's discounted rate for gas was axed in April after Moscow accused Kiev of failing to pays its bills.
On Monday, Gazprom stressed that it would continue to supply European consumers with gas at "full volume" and that it was Ukraine's responsibility to make sure the gas transited through the country.
However, correspondents say the EU could be affected.
About 15% of the EU's gas supply is Russian gas which is piped through Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Gazprom gave Ukraine more time to settle its gas bill after receiving a part-payment of $786m (£469m).
Ukraine said it refused to clear its debts completely in protest at Gazprom's recent 80% price increase.

Gazprom ended its discount price for Ukraine, which was negotiated by former President Viktor Yanukovych last December, in April.
Before the discount was cancelled, Ukraine's gas bill was heavily reduced by Russia to $268 per 1,000 cubic metres.
The price is now $485.50 per 1,000 cubic metres, the highest in Europe.
Almost 15% of gas used in Europe comes from Russia via Ukraine, which is why EU members are taking a particularly close interest in the stand-off, observers say.
The talks that ended on Monday had been brokered by EU representatives.
Heading into the negotiations, Kiev said it was ready to make the $1.95bn payment if Russia cut its price to $326 per 1,000 cubic metres.
But Russian President Vladimir Putin said $385 per 1,000 cubic metres was his final offer.
Prospects of a breakthrough in discussions were diminished in recent days after increasing tension between Kiev and Moscow over the pro-Russian insurgency in the east of Ukraine.
Moscow reacted angrily to a violent protest outside its embassy in Kiev on Saturday after separatists shot down a Ukrainian military plane, killing all 49 people on board.
Meanwhile, Ukraine accused Russia of sending tanks into the east of the country to support pro-Russian fighters.

POPULAR ELEPHANT KILLED IN KENYA NATIONAL PARK

The elephants of a nearly 50-year-old tusker known as Satao was found in the Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya's oldest and largest parks. Satao was known as a tusker because his huge tusks nearly reached the ground. (Via Southern Cross Safaris)
The Tsavo Trust, a Kenyan non-profit organization that supports and protects wildlife, said in a statement, "Satao was shot dead ... killed by an ivory poacher’s poisoned arrow to feed the seemingly insatiable demand for ivory in far off countries." The Tsavo Trust includes gruesome pictures of Satao's carcass slumped over in the mud with his face and tusks missing.
Satao's carcass was found May 30, but the Tsavo Trust said it withheld the news of the popular elephant's death-by-poaching until it could identify the remains.

Veterinarians confirmed that seeping wounds in the elephant's flank had come from arrows, most likely meant to take the tusker down.
In-memoriam pieces on Satao almost read like an obituary for a human. They describe an elephant as an "icon" who was self-aware, knowing that the tusks that made him popular to observers also made him a target to poachers. NPR reports he might've been one of a dozen left in Kenya.

Satao's death punctuates an ongoing poaching problem. He cites a report from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora that says more than 20,000 elephants were killed in Africa last year.


Mark Deeble ,wildlife filmmaker wrote about his encounter with Satao and how the huge elephant attempted to hide behind bushes. He wrote, "[Satao] wasn’t trying to hide his body, he was hiding his tusks. At once, I was incredibly impressed, and incredibly sad."

Fortunately,the Tsavo Trust said Satao's genes have most likely survived within the park's elephant population through his offspring.
